Thermal power generation plants are natural complements to wind and solar energy, providing on-demand power for peak periods and when wind or sunlight is unavailable.

Canada has ample supplies of natural gas, including more recent discoveries of shale gas. Landfill gas and biogas are also viable sources.

Northland has also been a pioneer in thermal energy production using biomass in the form of wood waste from lumber and paper mills as described below.
